Bellingham School District Adopts High School

Rugby for Boys and Girls

Bellingham, WA –  The Chuckanut Bay Athletic Association (CBAA) has reached a formal agreement with the Bellingham School District to develop new girls and boys rugby teams at each of three high schools. Bellingham, Squalicum and Sehome High Schools will begin training and playing as a spring sport.

The announcement coincides with the rapid growth of youth rugby, and local athletes competing at the World Cup and Olympic level, and WWUs recent appearance in the national collegiate playoffs.

Each Bellingham boys and girls high school team will enjoy official school recognition as an ASB sport, providing access to training and meeting facilities. While not yet sanctioned by the Washington Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA), the programs will report through Athletics and adhere to the same standards and codes of conduct. The programs are being delivered at no cost to the district, through modest dues & donations and coordination by the CBAA, the affiliate organization of Chuckanut Rugby Club.

Chuckanut Rugby Club, a local youth and adult club founded in 1973, has made Whatcom County one of America’s most productive sources of talent: In just the past dozen years, 15 local athletes have played for Team USA including Alex Cleary (Ferndale ‘18) who captained the USA’s delegation to the 2018 Youth Olympics in Rio; Titi Lamositele (Sehome ‘13) a London-based professional playing for Saracens in The Premiership;  and Cole Semu (Ferndale ‘18) who joined Jack Wendling (Squalicum ‘17) last summer in the USA national team against Canada U20s.

“This is a significant opportunity for aspiring student-athletes,” said Ferndale (‘17) multi-sport standout Ben Broselle, now playing for the USA and training for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic squad. “Chuckanut Rugby has given so many from our area the opportunity to play a varsity college sport, represent Team USA, become a professional athlete and see the world. Giving more local high school athletes the experience I’ve had is an amazing win for the Bellingham area.”

“The Bellingham School District has been a great advocate for the interests of its students,” said Craig Brown, President of Chuckanut Rugby Club. “Rugby embraces the culture of respect in sportsmanship. The game invites young people, of all background and abilities, to accept challenges and express themselves in the very best spirit of athletics.” Said Brown, “With so many emerging opportunities as an emerging NCAA and varsity sport, rugby is instilling qualities, offering experiences and providing opportunities that players, parents and educators embrace.”

Boys and Girls coaching appointments will be made by December 15th 2019. Coaches interested in being involved with these new high school clubs may email craig@chuckanutrugby.com.

Tour IN

July 9 2019 Brentwood Schools (England) u14 & u16 this school team proved to be very good on the pitch and gentleman off of the pitch in a fine School Rugby touring tradition. Traveling over from Essex, they came in for an afternoon match and had an excellent time meeting the club and playing some rugby.

July 10 2019 West Monmouth (Wales) came over, third trip to the club and was billeted for a few days by our members. The touring team had a chance to see the lay of our land, by touring around Whatcom County, going to Mt. Baker and enjoying some our local eatery's. The rugby was well played and an even contest was on display.

Can Am 7s Tournament

Congratulations to Bayside Men on their 7th win in the 41 year history. Congratulations to Budd Bay Women on their first CanAm 7s win! Great Day and really a wonderful example of our club coming together to be great hosts and volunteer so many hours to host this event! #oneclub

Summer Camp

Summer Camp for kids grades k-8 was a massive success and great to see how the kids progressively improved as the week went along. Camp Coach Chris Rowell did an outstanding job of recruiting 8 or so local coaches to come on out to give him a hand and to lead our Next Generation on improving their rugby. Really Good Stuff! thanks to Chris and the entire Coaching Camp Leaders on a great job!

Community Coaching Education Session

Our club, lead by Chris Rowell and Caleb Schlack introduced and refined the "Rugby Tackle" on how our sport and coaching progresses with safer tackle techniques. This is our 2nd year we have hosted American Football coaches at the club to discuss this topic and to exchange ideas with other local coaches. All Good! All Good for the Kids!
