Game Summary:
Chuckanut Bay U-19 ruggers beat the Liberty Patriots on Saturday at Magnuson Park in Seattle, and are the 2010 Rugby Washington State Champions!
The Steamers took a 5 - 0 lead with a try, only to have Liberty score a converted try and take a 7-5 lead. Chuckanut scored again on a penalty kick, for an 8-7 lead. The Patriots scored again on a penalty to take the lead back at 10-8. Chuckanut was able to score 2 tries and 1 conversion to go into half time with a 20-10 advantage.
In the second half Liberty came on strong and were able to put 19 points on the board to Chuckanut's 10. That was enough for the Steamers to pull out the victory 30-29.
This is the 2nd state championship win for the Steamers in the last 3 years.
Cole Freimund had 2 tries, 2 penalty kicks, and 1 conversion to lead all scorers with 18 points. Riley Locker and Ashton Green each had 1 try, and Max Rosenthal had 1 conversion.
During the 2010 season the Steamers played their most difficult schedule in the last 10 years. It included games with the California state champions, Lamorinda, the Utah and USA national champions, Highland, and the famous rugby school The High School of Glasgow, Scotland.
Chuckanut's next games will be at the Can Am 7's tournament on July 10th and 11th at the Bellingham Rugby and Polo Field in Ferndale.
